The Carstairs Sustainability Plan is an extension of what we are presently, but most importantly, what we will become. Using the Pillars of Sustainability, citizens and interested stakeholders have visualized a plan and a legacy for our children, grandchildren, and their grandchildren ... Keeping the goal in mind and looking to our future ...

What is Sustainability?
Sustainability is something that has been around for decades but most of us if honest have not been practicing sustainability to our full potential. Simply put, sustainability is "Enough for Everyone Forever".

The Five Pillars
There are five pillars to a sustainable community: Culture, Economic, Environment, Governance, and Social. Being sustainable means more than protecting the environment through recycling and toilet rebates – it also means increasing our financial efficiency, building social and cultural dimensions, and doing more with less over the long-term.

Sustainable development is defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

There is a broadly shared sense that sustainable development explicitly recognizes the interconnections and relationships between the economy, society, and the environment. Concepts of sustainability can guide improved programming, and better planning and development in society at all levels, from individual business plans to international policy.

This is what we are striving for in Carstairs, Alberta. We want to identify our sustainability goals and take practical steps to achieve these objectives.
